GRAND JUMBLE SALE - Saturday 26th March 2011
Our Jumble Sale regularly attracts over 300
customers. It has been a great success and given
us plenty of happy times. Its a perfect day out
for Jumblers and raises much needed money for
the group
The
sale features clothes, books, comics, jewellery,
bric-a-brac, toys, electrical items and much
much more. A BBQ will be serving food throughout
to provide much needed refreshments. We
welcome contributions. Upholstered
furniture must have a fire safety label.
Volunteers are
needed to help with the collection of Jumble,
sorting and manning the stalls on the day of the
sale. We will also need help with clearing up
after the event.
If you are able to help or need additional
information please contact the Jumble Sale
organizer, Deirdre Edwards on 01923 77162 or
07957 788402. For the collection of larger items
please telephone before Friday 18th March.
Beavers News
Beavers is great (in the true sense of the word)
- in fact we now have the largest colony we've
had for years and are full with 24 children
(boys and girls) attending regularly.
Since Christmas, we've had activities such as
ice hockey, cooking (peppermint creams),
creating masks and calendars and computing; and
we've visited St Mary's Church. As a result, all
beavers have been awarded their IT stage 1 badge
and have also gained their Faith activity badge.
The leaders are looking forward to having a
break over half term, and will be suitably
refreshed to run the rest of the spring term
meetings. Hopefully the weather will improve and
as evenings get lighter we're planning some
exciting outdoor activities.
Beavers will be doing a creative activity using
old CDs. If you have any unwanted CDs please
contact Jane Spur on
jane.spurr@kcl.ac.uk.
Doesn't matter if they don't work, are obsolete
or old freebies ...
Boat Maintenance/Rigging Day - Sunday 27th
February
The best time
for sailing, kayaking, canoeing and going out on
powe rboats
is fast approaching (when the days are longer,
and the water is warmer) and it would be great
if we had at least a 50% functioning fleet of
boats at Batchworth to do all these activities
in!
If you are able to help maintain the boats
contact Emma Turner, Bosun and Assistant Scout
Leader, on 07905765946.
Enjoy Low-Cost Dinghy Sailing Through Batchworth
Batchworth Sea Scouts are associated to the Bury
Lake Young Mariners (BLYM) sailing club based at
the Rickmansworth Aquadrome. Whilst the Scout
Troop make regular use of the great facilities
provided by BLYM, any member of Batchworth can
do the same in their own time and in addition to
the organised Group events. For example, a
Bograt Explorer can polish up on their sailing
skills on a breezy Saturday morning, or a Cub
Scout family could enjoying a gentle sail around
the lake on a warm Summer’s evening.
General sailing sessions run Saturday mornings
or afternoons, Wednesday evenings, Bank Holidays
and Summer Holidays. You must be pre-registered
with BLYM to take advantage of Batchworth’s
Group membership but this is simply achieved
following a quick briefing from me to ensure you
are familiar with the procedures at the club and
confident on the water. If you’d like to take
advantage of this scheme, please drop me an
email at
BMTaunt@hotmail.com, subject ‘BLYM sailing’.
BLYM also run RYA accredited training courses
throughout the year. I would highly recommend
these courses to all youngsters and encourage
you to check out more details at
www.blym.org.uk.

Badges All Round as Scouts Dig into Aviation
History

What do you do on a cold, damp and grey Saturday
in February? Visit a museum of course! Hence
16 Scouts from Batchworth found themselves at
the excellent RAF Museum in Hendon recently
exploring the many aircraft on display. Adding
to the purpose was a quiz sheet created by the
museum which guides the Scouts through tasks and
results in the award of the ‘Air Researchers
Badge’.
Other visitors may even have overheard some of
our knowledgeable members debating the
differences between the Spitfire and the
Hurricane fighters, shown on display behind our
group photo.
HMS
Cumberland Passes Gulf Duties to t he
Iron Duke
HMS Cumberland,
a Royal Navy type 22 Frigate affiliated with
Batchworth Sea Scouts,
recently handed over her Gulf responsibilities
to HMS Iron Duke.
The two ships met in the Gulf of Oman and Iron
Duke’s Command Team embarked on to Cumberland
for a handover brief and discussions. The two
ships conducted a traditional ‘sail-past’ where
the Cumberlanders waved banners and sprayed fire
hoses to wish their reliefs in Iron Duke a
successful deployment.
