UP FOR IT?

Climbing rock faces, kayaking, wild camping or yacht sailing to mention a few. If you've got the time, we’ve got all the equipment, expertise and support you'll need. Join young people your age and try something new. You don’t have to be an expert (and you don’t have to be a Scout) but yes, you probably will get wet. Bring your friends and find out what adventure really means.

Contact Simon on 07850 337903 or simontheobald@compuserve.com for more details.

Make every day an adventure.

SUPPORT FOR HAITI SCOUTS

BEAVERS - MOVERS AND SHAKERS

Jane Spurr, Assistant Beavers Scout Leader

Five Beavers moved up to Cubs this term and two new Beavers joined the colony. We could do with some more so if anybody has friends, neighbours or relatives who'd like to try Beavers, we'd be thrilled to see them. They should be at least 5 years 10 months old, and younger than 8.

We have a great programme of activities and events for the colony with the main focus on the Beavers having fun! The programme includes several water-based activities, as befits a Sea Scout Group, for when the weather gets warmer.

CUBS COMMUNICATOR DAY 2009

Roma Hansford, Cub Scout

90 cubs from different packs in the Rickmansworth and Chorleywood district took part in the communicator day. It consisted of about 8 activities which included:

  • Emailing/text/fax
  • The use public phone boxes
  • Codes/invisible ink
  • Following instructions
  • Braille
  • French
  • Morse code
  • Radio communications

The afternoon finished off with a party with excellent food and presentation of our badges!

SCOUTS PREPARE FOR ACTION PACKED 2010!

Ben Taunt, Assistant Scout Leader

After weeks of frantic negotiations, battling with spreadsheets and diary planners, the Scout Leaders have emerged from wherever it is they hibernate over Christmas clutching an action packed programme in their grasp! Pulling on ideas from the youngsters within the Group, together with recommendations from other Scout Troops, parents and specialist instructors, a diary of challenging, rewarding and fun events has been compiled for the next 5 months.

Included in this are exciting days out in London, opportunities for absolute beginner sailors to gain RYA (Royal Yachting Association) qualifications and exploring the wilds of England under various forms of transport.

The full programme is available now from the Leadership team and other key dates are included in the calendar below. Remember - it really helps the team with planning if you can confirm in advance what events you are interested in attending. And if you're not interested in what is planned, tell us that too and we'll incorporate your ideas into the mix!

SHIPSHAPE DAY

Keith Wall, Group Chairman

Our Shipshape day on Saturday 9th January had to be cancelled because of the heavy snow in the area. Thank you to all those who had set the morning aside to help. Watch this space for a rescheduled date.

IAN WEST CARTOONS

Ian West, the Epping based cartoonist and illustrator, who, amongst other things, produces images for Scouting Magazine, has kindly given permission for Batchworth Sea Scouts to use his cartoons in our newsletter.

The cartoons are a great read and we're aiming to feature at least one cartoon per newsletter. Hope you enjoy them. Many thanks Ian.

HMS CUMBERLAND WELCOMED HOME

HMS Cumberland, a Royal Navy type 22 Frigate affiliated with Batchworth Sea Scouts, was welcomed home after an Anti-Drugs and Piracy Patrol. More than 600 happy family members and friends gave the crew of the Royal Navy warship a warm welcome on her return to the UK after six and a half months on patrol.

A Royal Marine band entertained the huge enthusiastic crowd of well-wishers who braved a bitterly cold northerly wind and rain showers as they waited on the jetty at the ship’s base port HM Naval Base Devonport, Plymouth.
