COUNTY CUB NIGHT HIKE 2009

The County Cub Night Hike was held on the outskirts of Hemel Hempstead on Sat 19th September. 500 Cubs took part supported by 250 Scouts, Explorer Scouts and leaders. The hike was a six mile walk including six map reading themed activity bases. The route included fields, woods, towpaths and country lanes in the dark followed by an overnight stay in a local school. The event started at 6:30pm and continued past midnight. Batchworth entered two teams of 5 cubs.

Batchworth also helped man Base 3 - the OS Symbol Quiz challenge together with Peter Edwards, our District Commissioner and other volunteers from the district.

NATIONAL YOUTH DRAGON BOAT CHAMPIONSHIPS

Congratulations to Batchworth scouts who come second in the mixed category in the National Youth Dragon Boat Championships at Longridge 26th September. Well done to all those who took part.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We are in need of volunteers who are willing to help us complete several projects around our headquarters on Riverside Drive. The projects are typically small, can be done on any day of the week and sometimes require specific skills.

In particular we need structural engineers, tree surgeons, plumbers, carpenters, electricians, welders and decorators who would be willing to help on an ad-hoc basis. We also need help with maintaining the boats and the grounds. If you don’t have these specific skills but just want to help there are plenty of other things to do, big and small, inside and outside, manual or administrative. As a 100% volunteer group we rely on the people being generous with their time to help us keep Batchworth Sea Scouts running smoothly.

Additionally, our next ShipShape Day is on Saturday 7th November 9am. This is when we look after our building and the surrounding areas. All are welcome, teas and chocy biscuits are usually provided and we spend a couple of hours clearing up, sorting out, tidying away and generally getting our HQ “Shipshape” We look forward to seeing you.

If you, or someone you know, can help please contact our Group Chairman, Keith Wall, on batchworth.chairman@ntlworld.com or 01923 777340.

JUMBLE SALE

A big thank you to all those who gave jumble, helped with leafleting, collecting, sorting, selling, moving the boats and kayaks and the clearing up afterwards..

We had a great day and made £2,340 profit. A Jumble record! This includes £114 received on goods from the previous jumble sale which were sold on e-Bay. It is a wonderful result for a lot of hard work.

Thank you to everyone you helped. We couldn't have done it without you!

RICKMANSWORTH SOCIETY AUTUMN FAIR

The Rickmansworth society aims to promote a feeling of true community and to foster at all times a spirit of friendliness and co-operation throughout the Rickmansworth district. The society's Autumn fair was held at Watersmeet, Saturday 10th October 2009.

Batchworth Sea Scouts showed its support for the charity by having a stall at the fair. £319.16 was raised for the group with the leftover items going to Scope and a Third World charity. A big thank you to all those who helped on the day.

RECRUITMENT

We are keen to build up a big strong Troop at Batchworth.  We are blessed with some of the best equipment in the District and have several recent additions to the leadership team to allow for ever increasingly exciting activities to be organised regularly.  To help us run these activities, we need regular attendance from our current members, but we also currently have a number of open positions for sea scouts and wish to encourage new joiners at all ages from 10 ½ - 14.

Anyone can attend Scout meetings for a number of weeks before committing to becoming a member (3 weeks would be typical).  Encouraging friends to come to meetings will help both to enjoy the activities on offer.  Older or younger friends or friend’s siblings can equally get involved in Beaver, Cub or Explorer Sections, who are also open to new members.

Please help us to grow Batchworth back to being the best Group in South-West Hertfordshire!
